Hunting Key for Nature Conservation: IPBES Assessment Report on Sustainable Use
In a new assessment report, IPBES has concluded that hunting revenues play an important role in nature conservation.
The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Panel on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) recently approved the IPBES Assessment Report on Sustainable Use of Wild Species. A summary of the assessment was released for policy makers, which summarised the key messages and outcomes of the sustainable use assessment.
The CIC is welcoming of the new assessment as it is well reflective of IPBES’ commitment to sustainable use as an instrument for conservation, as well as the idea that people should have the right to use these resources in a sustainable manner.
In many countries, hunting licences and leases are an important source of income for conservation authorities and local communities. Regulated, controlled hunting also contributes to the food security of many people worldwide, especially in developing countries.
As one of the leading organisations engaged in conservation through sustainable use, the CIC has been working for many years to support regulated, sustainable hunting initiatives that offer holistic benefits to wildlife species, habitats and human well-being.
The IPBES Assessment Report on the Sustainable Use of Wild Species is expected to be one of the tools used to inform the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework, which is due to be adopted at the upcoming CBD CoP 15 later this year.
