In 2023, the Global Biodiversity Framework was launched with a major target to ensure that at least 30% of land, freshwater, and marine areas are effectively conserved by 2030 – commonly referred to as the “30×30” target.
HOW DOES CIC CONTRIBUTE TO GBF TARGET 3?
1. OECMs
Globally, an estimated 90% of biodiverse land that could be included in the 30×30 target is privately owned. Many of CIC’s members are landowners who can offer their lands towards the 30% by 2030 target in the category of “Other Effective Area Based Conservation Measures“. These are lands managed to support long-term biodiversity and ecosystem health while also respecting and incorporate local cultural, spiritual, and socio-economic values – including responsible hunting of select species (including invasive animals).
CIC’s Policy Branch is working to ensure that these lands are incorporated into state and national allocations towards the 30×30 target.
