African Leaders Unite at United Nations Event to Tackle Conservation Challenges in the Miombo Woodlands
New York, 23 September 2024 – On the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, African heads of state, ministers, and conservation experts convened at the Miombo Woodlands Initiative Heads of State Reception at the Metropolitan Club in New York. The event, hosted by the International Conservation Caucus Foundation (ICCF), focused on the critical efforts needed to protect and sustainably manage the Miombo Woodlands, a vital ecosystem for biodiversity in Southern Africa.
Present on behalf of CIC were Tristan Breijer FRGS, Senior Communications and Public Affairs Advisor, and CIC Special Advisor Wilfried Pabst, who had the honour of engaging with leaders such as President Mokgweetsi Masisi of Botswana, President Lazarus Chakwera of Malawi, President Filipe Nyusi of Mozambique, and Hon. Minister Pohamba Shifeta of Namibia.
While the formal agenda addressed conservation and sustainable management within the Miombo region, discussions also focused on Botswana’s elephant conservation efforts and other critical wildlife initiatives.
This reception underscored the importance of collaboration between governments and organizations to drive conservation action. CIC continues to support its cooperations and to build upon its role in promoting sustainable use and wildlife management across Africa.
