Nashville, Tennessee – Within the setting of the Safari Club International Convention, a significant announcement was made regarding Alberta’s intention to join the International Council for Game and Wildlife Conservation (CIC) as the first provincial and North American state member. This historic decision reinforces Alberta’s leadership in sustainable use, conservation research, and the economic and cultural importance of hunting.
Convened by Shane Mahoney, President of the CIC Policy and Law Division, the meeting was attended by the Honourable Todd Loewen, Minister of Forestry and Parks; Matt Besko, Executive Director of Alberta’s Hunting and Fishing Branch; and Corey Jarvis, President of the Alberta Professional Outfitters Association. Representing the CIC were Dr. Philipp Harmer (CIC President), Sebastian Winkler (Director General), Arno Wimpffen (Deputy Director General), Tristan Breijer (Director of Communications and Public Affairs).
Alberta’s membership, to be ratified at the CIC General Assembly in Doha in 2025, marks a new chapter in transatlantic collaboration and international conservation efforts. Alberta’s inclusion will enhance ties between continents, position the province as a premier international hunting destination, and exemplify its commitment to sustainable wildlife management.
