The International Council for Game and Wildlife Conservation (CIC) extends its congratulations to Anton Larcher on his re-election as Landesjägermeister (State Hunting Director) of Tirol. At the general assembly of the Tiroler Jägerverband (TJV) held today in Innsbruck, Mr Larcher was re-elected with an overwhelming 91% of the vote to serve a further six-year term.
The Landesjägermeister is the elected head of provincial hunting in Tirol and serves as the chief authority on wildlife management and game policy. The role entails overseeing collaboration between hunters, landowners, foresters, and policymakers to ensure sustainable hunting and ecological balance throughout the Alpine region.
A CIC Member since 2008, Mr Larcher is a certified engineer (DI (FH)), master builder, hunting leaseholder and gamekeeper. Over more than a decade of leadership, he has been at the forefront of regional responses to increasing red deer cull quotas, land-use conflicts, and wolf recolonisation. His work reflects a clear commitment to science-based wildlife governance and the principles of conservation through sustainable use.
CIC President Dr Philipp Harmer attended the assembly and personally congratulated Mr Larcher on his re-election. Also present was Ernst Weidenbusch, President of the Bayerischer Jagdverband (Bavarian Hunting Association), which is an NGO Member of the CIC and a valued partner in cross-border cooperation on hunting and conservation matters.
The event also featured a speech by Franz Mayr-Melnhof, Landesjägermeister of Styria and current President of Jagd Österreich, Austria’s national hunting association. His address emphasised the importance of national unity in defending sustainable hunting practices and reaffirmed the close collaboration between Austria’s regional hunting authorities.
Mr Larcher’s re-election highlights the enduring relevance of hunting-led conservation in maintaining resilient ecosystems and supporting rural communities in Tirol and beyond.
