H.E. Dumizweni Meshack Mthimkhulu addressing the 70th CIC General Assembly in Cascais, Portugal, April 2024.

The International Council for Game and Wildlife Conservation (CIC) mourns the loss of His Excellency, Dumizweni Meshack Mthimkhulu, the Honourable Minister of Environment and Tourism of the Republic of Botswana, who passed away on 2 September 2024.

Minister Mthimkhulu was a passionate advocate for the sustainable use of wildlife resources, playing a crucial role in shaping Botswana’s conservation policies. His leadership and vision were not confined to Botswana; he was a respected figure on the global stage, particularly in his forthright defence of sustainable hunting as a legitimate tool for conservation.

The CIC had the honour of working closely with Minister Mthimkhulu, most notably during his participation at our General Assembly in Cascais, Portugal, in April this year. His insights and contributions were invaluable to our collective efforts in wildlife conservation. We also remember his recent visit to Germany and France, where he engaged in significant discussions with CIC leadership and European counterparts, furthering the dialogue on international cooperation in wildlife management.

The CIC community extends its deepest condolences to Minister Mthimkhulu’s family, colleagues, and the people of Botswana. His legacy will continue to inspire our work in promoting sustainable wildlife management worldwide.
