In Memoriam: Jan Erik Heino
It is with profound sadness that the CIC (International Council for Game and Wildlife Conservation) announces the passing of Jan Erik Heino, a towering figure in global forestry, conservation, and wildlife management.
Born on 22 July 1947 in Liljendal, Finland, Jan’s illustrious career spanned decades, continents, and countless milestones in the realm of sustainable forestry and conservation. He held numerous senior positions throughout his life, most notably as Assistant Director-General and Head of the Forestry Department at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) from 2006 to 2010. Earlier, as Director General of Metsähallitus, the Finnish State Forest Enterprise, Jan was instrumental in advancing sustainable forest management practices across Finland and beyond.
Jan’s contributions to the CIC were equally significant. After retiring from FAO, he joined the CIC as President of the Policy and Law Division. A visionary advocate, he pioneered the creation of the Collaborative Partnership on Sustainable Wildlife Management (CPW), serving as its first Chair. His work championed the integration of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities in conservation efforts, ensuring that their voices remained central to international dialogues.
Jan’s passion for nature was not limited to professional pursuits. At heart, he was a true outdoorsman who cherished the forests near his home in Finland, where he spent countless hours foraging for mushrooms and berries with his wife, or imitating the calls of wild doves in his unique style.
The CIC honours Jan Erik Heino’s extraordinary life and his immeasurable contributions to conservation and sustainable use. His passing is a loss for the global conservation community, but his wisdom and passion will continue to inspire generations to come.
