It is with profound sadness that the CIC (International Council for Game and Wildlife Conservation) announces the passing of Louis de Rohan-Chabot, former Head of the CIC’s French Delegation and a much respected figure in the French and international conservation and hunting communities.

Born on 7 December 1940 in Paris, Louis devoted much of his life to the service of wildlife conservation, hunting culture and the institutions that sustain them. He served as Head of the CIC’s French Delegation in the early 2000s, guiding its work with dedication and quiet authority. He was also President of the Club de la Chasse et de la Nature in Paris, and gave many years of devoted service to the François Sommer Foundation, including as its Treasurer. Within the CIC he served on the Literary Jury from 2008 and was elected to the Steering Group, the President’s advisory group, in 2011.

A passionate hunter and a warm, loyal friend, Louis was known throughout the community for his generosity, his wit and his unfailing elegance in all things. Known affectionately to many as Loulou, he was a wonderful companion in the field and a president whose warmth and good humour will long be remembered. In his final years he faced illness with characteristic dignity and discretion, never losing his attachment to the CIC or his love of the natural world.

The CIC honours Louis de Rohan-Chabot’s remarkable life and his lasting contribution to conservation and the sustainable use of wildlife. His passing is a profound loss to the international conservation community, yet his dedication, friendship and example will continue to inspire all who knew him.

The CIC extends its deepest and most heartfelt condolences to his wife, Marie-Christine, to his daughters, Laure, Carine and Stéphanie, and to all his family and friends.
